It is another month until Spring officially starts. Yet amidst the persistent
snow, sleet, slush and cold rain of this gray winter I thought to share some flora
from our collections, specifically from a friendship book owned by Sallie Pierce Blair.
Printed by J. C. Riker of New York between 1844 and 1854, Gems from Flora contains four color lithographs and blank pages for writing. Friends of Sallie’s and her daughters wrote verses celebrating fond memories and friendship. The few entries dating from 1855 to 1934 celebrate memories of friendship between Sallie, her daughters, and grandchildren.
The daughter of Alexander Peirce and ELizabeth F. Bell Pierce, Sallie Pierce was born on Valentine’s Day 1838. She married Francis S. Blair in November 1865 and had six children including Alexander (1866-1891), John Chester (1868-1907), Francis Joseph, Robert William (1873-1924), David Sullins (1875-1960), and Florence Bell, who married Thomas Wilson Preston. Frank S. Blair died 14 January 1899 and Sallie died 17 April 1921. Both are buried in East End Cemetery in Wytheville.
I hope you enjoy these delightful drawings – maybe Spring will come sooner than expected!
